Aloe Vera: skin hero

Aloe Vera: skin hero

Aloe vera has worked wonders in clearing my skin and making it look younger. Skin care companies have been touting the magic of aloe vera for ages, but I wanted to know exactly what it is about aloe that is so great for my skin.

First off, bacteria can cause acne and aloe vera contains salicylic acid that kills it off. It has antiseptic properties that keep bacteria at bay, which not only helps fight and clear existing pimples, but also works to keep skin clear in the future.

Aloe vera is also chock full of vitamins, namely Vitamin A, C, and E. Vitamin A — from which retinol is derived — is a natural exfoliant, promotes the production of new skin cells, and draws moisture to the skin’s surface. It’s used widely in both anti-acne and anti-aging products. Vitamin C protects skin from UV damage, promotes collagen production, and helps reduct hyperpigmentation (which gets harder, the older I get). Then, we’ve got Vitamin E which softens and nourishes skin, as well as encourages healing.

On top of all those vitamins, aloe vera contains enzymes that fight free radicals. These environmental toxins can wreak havoc on our skin, causing it to age quickly and lose its luster, evenness, and elasticity. Free radicals’ archenemy: ANTIOXIDANTS! And you guessed it, aloe vera is brimming with antioxidants.

So, do I want clearer, younger looking skin that not only glows, but heals quickly and is protected from future damage? Yes please. Bring on the organic, cold-pressed aloe vera.
